Guariento di Arpo was based in Padua, famous site of Giotto’s heartbreaking fresco-cycle in the Arena Chapel.

There, he had fallen under the spell of Giotto’s frescoes in the Arena Chapel at Padua.

More recently, he turned to old masters paintings for his source material, borrowing details from works at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt for one series and Giotto’s Arena Chapel frescoes for another.

Lacking an unfolding story, like that of Genesis or the Gospels—with their graphic-novel episodes so easily depicted on the Sistine ceiling or in Padua’s Arena Chapel—it is a poem meant to be chanted, not a tale meant to be tracked.

The train finally deposited a smelly and famished Feldman in the Italian city of Padua — just as its famous Arena Chapel was about to close.
