Maduro has hailed the result as a "victory of peace and stability" and celebrated the fact that his party had regained control of the states of Zulia and, in particular, Barinas, the home state of his predecessor in office and political mentor, Hugo Chávez.

Superlano was a candidate for governor of Barinas, where Chávez was born, in 2021.

Maritza Carrizo, an asylum seeker from Barinas, Venezuela, sat on a bunk bed at a migrant shelter.

Speaking at Voluntad Popular headquarters, party member Barboza called Superlano a "man who beat Chavismo", referring to his 2021 victory in the race for governorship of Barinas state, a former stronghold of the ruling party as the birthplace of late President Hugo Chavez.

“We work hard every single day,” said Jesus Cardoso, 29, a migrant from the Venezuelan state of Barinas.
