In fact some of the heaviest rain will come overnight with weather fronts sweeping eastwards on both Friday and Saturday nights.

The US National Weather Service said tornadoes also hit neighbouring Illinois, with more severe weather conditions stretching eastwards to the Atlantic coast.

As that area of high pressure drifts slowly eastwards it is opening the door to a feed of south or south-easterly winds, bringing warm air from continental Europe.

On Saturday night, the cloud and rain will push eastwards across the UK and Sunday will see areas of lingering cloud, sunny spells and showers.

Some suggest that high pressure will drift away eastwards by the end of next week keeping things fairly warm but also bringing bands of cloud and outbreaks of rain.
