It is an “equal-area” map, distorting the shape of countries as a two-dimensional visualization of a three-dimensional globe but accurately scaling surface areas.

Given that the CMIP5 models use different spatial grids to provide their data, we interpolated data from all models to an equal-area grid with a resolution of 100km, using an area-weighted average interpolation method in which the data from the models’ grid were transferred to our grid proportionally to the area that they occupied on our grid cells.

On the usual equal-area map of people born in India, only a few mostly urban 'dots' are visible.
