More About November
What isNovember?
November is the eleventh month of the year in the Gregorian calendar. It has 30 days and is between October and December.
In the Northern Hemisphere November is a middle month of the autumn season, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s a middle month of the spring season.
In the United States, November is a busy month. The first Tuesday after the first Monday is Election Day, when general elections are held. November 11 is Veterans Day, a national holiday that honors members of the country’s armed forces. Thanksgiving Day, a national holiday to give thanks, is on the fourth Thursday in November, followed by Native American Heritage Day, to honor Native Americans’ contribution to the country, on the fourth Friday.
Example: I spend all of November preparing for the holidays and I feel like I don’t get a break until January.
Where doesNovember come from?
The first records of the word November come from before 1000. It ultimately comes from the Latin November, meaning “ninth month.”
In the 10-month Roman calendar, which started with March, November was the ninth month. When Julius Caesar took control of Rome, he changed the length of some months and added new ones because January was falling in autumn due to the calendar’s inaccuracies. He added Quintilis, later to become July (named after Julius), and Sextilis, which would later become August (named after Augustus Caesar). This is how November went from being the ninth month to the eleventh month. Our Gregorian calendar is based on this Julius calendar.
