Spin-off show Torchwood left a lasting legacy when it concluded in 2011, with a shrine at Cardiff Bay commemorating the late character Ianto Jones who was in a relationship with John Barrowman's pansexual character Captain Jack Harkness.

He said: "It is a different show, it does not have The Doctor in it. We have done that over the years. There was Torchwood, which was set in Cardiff and the Sarah Jane Adventures."

These include serial killers in both the BBC One/Starz series “Torchwood: Miracle Day” and Jennifer Lynch’s 2008 film “Surveillance,” as well as a detective with a troubling underside in USA Network’s anthology series “The Sinner.”

Over his long career in television, film and theater, Gelder also appeared in the beloved British sci-fi show “Doctor Who” and its spinoff, “Torchwood,” as well as in “His Dark Materials,” a television adaptation of the trilogy of fantasy novels by Philip Pullman.

Born in 1949, the British actor was also known as Mr. Dekker in 2009’s “Torchwood: Children of Earth,” the sci-fi spinoff of the “Doctor Who” revival.
