In 2001, a Libyan intelligence officer, Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, was convicted of the bombing and 270 counts of murder, following a trial in front of three Scottish judges sitting in a special court at Camp Zeist in the Netherlands.

Megrahi stood trial alongside another Libyan, Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah, at Camp Zeist - a specially convened Scottish court in the Netherlands.

Former Libyan intelligence officer Al-Megrahi was found guilty of 270 counts of murder by a panel of three Scottish judges, sitting at a special court set up at a former US military base, Camp Zeist, in the Netherlands in 2001 and was imprisoned in Scotland.

Years of deadlock and sanctions followed, until the involvement of Nelson Mandela and a UN-brokered deal led to a trial in a Scottish court at Camp Zeist, a former US airbase in the Netherlands.

A month after the charges against Masud had been made public, Scottish judges rejected Megrahi's posthumous appeal and upheld the verdict delivered at Camp Zeist 20 years earlier.
