water moccasin vs. water snake: What's the difference?

Water moccasins and water snakes are both semiaquatic types of snakes. Water moccasin usually refers to a snake also called the cottonmouth: a venomous swamp-dwelling snake of the southeastern U.S., but be careful because it can also refer to any of various similar but harmless snakes. Water snake is the more general term and can refer to any of the numerous and widely distributed harmless snakes inhabiting areas in or near fresh water.
