It derives from Greek 别辫丑岣梞别谤辞蝉 鈥渟hort-lived, lasting but a day.鈥� 贰辫丑岣梞别谤辞蝉 is ultimately based on the preposition and adverb 别辫铆 鈥渦pon, up to, during,鈥� among many other senses, and the noun 丑脓尘茅谤补 鈥渄ay.鈥� In English, ephemeral originally described fevers that spanned just a day, and evolved to refer to organisms (and other things) not long for this world, including flowers or insects鈥攍ike the mayfly, which is classified as an ephemerid and shuffles off this mortal coil within two days. 贰辫丑岣梞别谤辞蝉 is also the source of the English plural noun ephemera (singular ephemeron) 鈥渋tems designed to be useful or important for only a short time, especially pamphlets, notices, tickets, etc.鈥� Ephemeral has not proved as much in English, entering in the late 1500s.
