According to the preliminary results of the legislative election, the coalition backing President Maduro won an absolute majority of the 285 seats.

Under Germany's constitution, there is no limit to how many votes can be held, but ultimately if no absolute majority is reached then a candidate can be elected without one.

If none achieve that in the first round, the candidate with the fewest votes will be eliminated, and additional rounds will then be conducted until someone has an absolute majority.

Most exit polls, following the vote on Wednesday, had predicted an absolute majority for the BJP, giving them more than 35 seats.

France has been beset by political uncertainty since Macron called snap elections over the summer which resulted in a hung parliament where no group had an absolute majority.
