Actors were represented by two groups, SAG and AFTRA, and they were riven with internal factions — each holding opposing views about which course of action each should take in their contract negotiations with the studios.

Twenty years later came two more long strikes: SAG/AFTRA shouldered signs for three months beginning in the summer of 1980; the WGA stomped sidewalks for three more months the following spring.

She presided over the historic 2012 merger of SAG with its former rival, AFTRA.
