One of the world's most endangered amphibians - the strange, perpetually smiling Mexican axolotl - has thrived after being released in artificial wetlands, scientists have discovered.

"This is a critical time of year for our native wildlife – with birds nesting and other animals such as amphibians and reptiles coming out of winter dormancy and starting to breed."

Across mainland Europe, a number of exotic reptiles and amphibians have been accidentally discovered, particularly in potted olive trees:

The expedition also found a new species of dwarf squirrel, eight types of fish, three amphibians and 10 types of butterfly.

The highlighting process now finally works in amphibians.
