A magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit near Alaska's Atka Island, part of the state's chain of Aleutian Islands, the U.S.

Apparently anticipating a Japanese move east to Atka Island and northeast to the Pribilof Islands, the Army announced the evacuation of 550 natives to southeastern Alaska.
