The 33-song “Atum” sounds different from the band’s 2020 album “Cyr,” with music ranging from airy to headbanging, and the new single “Spellbinding” has 1980s-inspired synths before a heavier guitar-led chorus kicks in.

Smashing Pumpkins have the last chapter to their ambitious three-part rock opera “Atum” on the way.

In fact, there’s a lot of vintage-synth stuff on the “Atum” album, much to the dismay of my guitar-loving fan base.

“Atum,” released in three parts starting last November, is a sweeping sci-fi narrative that Corgan has called a sequel to both “Mellon Collie” and the 2000 concept album “Machina/The Machines of God.”

A full performance of “Atum,” which Corgan envisions as an evening-length theatrical happening, is still only a hypothetical, but select songs will be heard live this summer and fall, when the band presents its The World Is a Vampire Tour.
