It is a form of bone oil, a product obtained in the manufacture of bone-black, or animal charcoal, by the distillation of bones.

The clear solution of bone oil in benzine collected in the bottle is then brought into a small retort which is connected with a thoroughly cooled receiver.

From such things as feet, knuckles, hide clippings, and sinews came such strange and unlikely products as gelatin, isinglass, and phosphorus, bone black, shoe blacking, and bone oil.

Crude bone oil has a most offensive smell.
