Badger culling has been used to contain bovine tuberculosis but will end in England within five years as part of a shift in the fight against the disease, the government said last year.

Vets are key to protecting our agri-food industry, whether through the bovine TB testing programme or monitoring animal welfare in marts.

Here, bovine refers to the species for dairy cows that were the immediate source of the virus for the human infection.

A study looking at blood samples from workers at H5N1-infected dairy farms in Michigan and Colorado found that many human infections go undetected, each one offering the bovine virus more chances to adapt to us.

“Despite more than 50 human infections with bovine H5N1, we have not seen evidence of this virus adapting to humans on a larger scale,” Kawaoka said.
