But for people like Rodriguez — a sole breadwinner living in a rent-controlled apartment — it’s just another stressor compounding an already grim financial reality.

“He is the sole breadwinner and they have a young baby,” she said.

She said her father is the family’s “breadwinner,” and without his paycheck, there are “hard times coming” for her and her three brothers.

"This girl is actually the breadwinner of the family. She's taking all her siblings to school and nobody talks about it as a bad thing any more," he says.
