One of Maria Callas’ most hair-raising roles was her Medea in Luigi Cherubini’s 1797 opera, which was an influence on Beethoven’s revolutionary “Fidelio,” thus helping usher in the Romantic-era ideal of a woman as liberator.

This year’s Roads of Friendship concert series will launch on July 7 in Ravenna, and feature the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra founded by Muti, the Cremona Ancient Choir as well as Jordanian musicians.

Norma is a descendant of Medea, a character who opened the Met’s season in Luigi Cherubini’s 1797 opera.

Sporting director Cherubini - not among the indicted representatives - and Massimiliano Allegri, will be responsible for what happens on the playing side.

Rizzi’s “Medea” had the formality of Gluck, who influenced Cherubini, mixed with hints of the tumultuous “Sturm und Drang” movement to come.
