Frederick Clarkson, a senior research analyst at Political Research Associates, a progressive think tank based in Somerville, Massachusetts, defines the Seven Mountains Mandate as “the theocratic idea that Christians are called by God to exercise dominion over every aspect of society by taking control of political and cultural institutions.”

Hunter had the idea of writing the play when visiting his home town of Moscow Idaho, about 30 miles from Clarkson, and became interested in "the idea that the American West is still kind of young", following the Louisiana Purchase in the early 19th Century.

But the play also showcased a new generation of acting talent, including Patricia Clarkson and Dylan Baker, two classmates of Greenberg’s from the Yale School of Drama who, having been steeped in Shakespeare and Shaw, had no problem delivering the rapid-fire repartee of the play’s carefully sculpted dialogue.

Clarkson, in a league of her own, turned the gold of Greenberg’s prose into embodied thought and feeling.
