Northumbrian Water has been supplying artificially fluoridated water since the late 1960s to Chester-le-Street, Consett, and Stanley in County Durham, Alnwick, Hexham and Cramlington in Northumberland and parts of North Tyneside, Newcastle and Gateshead.

About 16 in County Durham, including Consett Infant School and one in Northumberland, have been unable to open due to adverse weather.

Labour's Liz Twist, Blaydon and Consett, who is chair of the board of trustees at Age UK Gateshead, voted with her party to restrict the payment to the poorest pensioners.

Located in a former mining village, Mrs Brown's Post Office in Annfield Plain in County Durham had been named as one of the area's most successful branches, vying with larger ones in Consett and Chester-le-Street.
