That is why we are providing local authorities £186.5m this year as part of an agreement with Cosla to restore teacher numbers to 2023 levels, as well as freezing learning hours and making meaningful progress on reducing class contact time."

Council umbrella body Cosla said local authorities took the issue of safety in schools extremely seriously.

Earlier this month, the Scottish government and council body Cosla announced a joint consultation on the issue.

However, in December Cosla and the Scottish government signed an official agreement to maintain teacher numbers and freeze learning hours.

Transport Scotland said it would consider the recommendations while working with council body Cosla, as well as regional transport and local authority partners.
