One of her former cosmetology students asked for advice on how to start his own salon.

These were mostly certificate programs at for-profit institutions — many of them offering cosmetology programs.

She worked most recently as a cosmetology instructor at the Mixed Institute in Sacramento, where she was known as Miss Angel.

She was working as a shampoo girl at her mother’s hair salon and going to cosmetology school, then letting loose at night: “I always say, clubs are my classroom.”

Philo said the work performed by students was not directly connected to their cosmetology education.
