They may have to purchase food and fuel from the people who live there, desalinize ocean water to drink, and use only enough munitions to do the job.

“This should be a wake up call,” said Maya Jacobs, the director of Zalul, an organization that advocates preserving bodies of water in and around Israel, which relies heavily on desalinized water.

And there is even more fresh or moderately salty water at more extreme depths than this that could potentially be retrieved and desalinized someday for drinking water, or for use in agriculture.

Israel has substantially increased its capacity to desalinize water over the last decade.
