The Northern Irishman made four bogeys across the front nine but a double bogey on the 12th probably ruined his hopes of a late charge on Sunday.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau is heading home though after a round that included eight bogeys and a double bogey left him 10 over.

Masters champion McIlroy had started well and was two under through nine holes, but then unravelled with four bogeys and a double bogey as he posted a four-over 74.

His criticism followed a wayward shot - with a 'mudball' - on the 16th that cost him a double bogey.

He briefly led on Sunday after a birdie on the second coupled with McIlroy's double bogey on the first but eventually finished tied for fifth.
