But if your Mac is a bit older like that 2009 MacBook Pro, you’ll need a cable that goes from mini DisplayPort to whatever your external monitor uses, such as HDMI, full DisplayPort, maybe even DVI.

All of that is before you get to the video outputs that are on whatever graphics card you install – my review unit’s card has DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI options.

DVI connections, for example, deliver better performance than VGA connections.

First, you need to make sure your graphics adapter and the monitor have the same ports: VGA, DVI, HDMI.
