A BBC Crimewatch appeal features e-fit images of a man seen carrying a blond-haired child of three or four in Praia da Luz at about the time Madeleine went missing.

He also bore a resemblance to an e-fit of a man with whom Ms Lamplugh was seen talking to on the day she went missing - thought to be the mysterious Mr Kipper.

They had been kept along with a thin wedge of case notes from the original investigation and an e-fit she had helped create at the time.

Using a system known as Electronic Facial Identification Technique, or E-FIT for short, the Kent police mocked up a computer-generated composite of the suspect’s identifying features, which, uh, came out looking like this:
