When they told their friend — and the movie’s eventual producer — actor and filmmaker Joel Edgerton about the travel nightmare, he encouraged them to get writing.

A few have sneaked in a success, most notably Joel Edgerton, who starred opposite Cate Blanchett’s Blanche in the Liv Ullmann production that came to BAM in 2009.

Edgerton plays Jason, an unfulfilled physics teacher who is attacked one night by a masked man who also drugs him.

Yet none are off-putting enough to upset the sturdiness of the faithful screenplay and the marvelous performances, particularly Carey Mulligan’s fragile Daisy, Joel Edgerton’s blowhard Tom and, especially, DiCaprio’s complex work in the title role.

I wrote in my review that its ideas are many and perhaps not terribly coherent, but there are pleasures in the enjoyable performances from Edgerton, Weaver and Quintessa Swindell.
