In the book you discuss deep roots between the MLM industry and the right wing, free market conservative thought leaders.

But are they truly rejecting “free market” conservatism, or is this just a tactical shift in their strategy to support the scramble for sheer profit and accumulated wealth, glossed over with religious rhetoric?

There are three primary reasons, I believe: Misinformation and disinformation; a tendency to believe the worst about the "other side"; and a profound misunderstanding of capitalism and free markets, which has created widespread financial dissatisfaction.

“The economy does best when government doesn’t pick winners and losers,” said Wayne Winegarden, senior fellow of business and economics at Pacific Research Institute, a California-based think tank that advocates for free markets.

Moreover, his staunch defense of the free market put him at odds with ordinary Peruvians, who were reeling from the country’s economic crisis and a burgeoning civil conflict.
