The Department of Environmental Conservation says freshwater drum, also called sheephead, are growing much bigger than they ever have in New York waters.

The freshwater drum caught by Jason Bair, of Macedon, on June 16 weighed 36 pounds, beating the previous state record set last year by more than 6 pounds.

Jody David says most of the fish are buffalo fish, freshwater drum and a few catfish.

It broke the previous state record for freshwater drum by more than 3 pounds.

Freshwater drum are also called sheepshead and are easily identified by their pronounced blunt head.
