A growing outbreak in the Mexican state of Chihuahua was also reported after a resident fell ill after visiting Gaines County.

The most prominent speaker was Riley Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer who has railed against transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, a focus during Trump’s second election campaign.

The man’s death comes a little over a week after Texas health officials announced that an unvaccinated school-age child died in Gaines County — the first measles-related death reported in America since 2015.

The Texas Department of Public Health is currently recommending bonus doses for infants in six counties, including Gaines, where the largest outbreak emerged.
