The county of Middlesex was abolished in the 1960s when it was absorbed into Greater London, although its name still pops up in areas across north London, most notably at Middlesex County Cricket Club.

Some parts of Greater London, Hampshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Yorkshire have had 20 days without a drop of rain.

The 1998 Greater London Authority referendum, held in May that year, asked whether there was support for creating a Greater London Authority with a directly elected mayor and Assembly.

The Greater London Authority plans to remove the graffiti but this requires specialist equipment and "we are confident this will be done shortly,", the Met added.

The mayor said he was "delighted" the government was looking to review his licencing powers alongside the Greater London Authority.
