The madcap events of the pit-stop period, safety car and Verstappen's penalty helped Alex Albon vault to fourth in the results, ahead of George Russell's Mercedes, Lance Stroll's Aston Martin, Lawson and Haas' Oliver Bearman, who drove an excellent race to take the final point from 19th on the grid.

Bearman lost control at Turns 11 and 12, spinning his Haas into the wall four minutes before the end of the session.

Add that to this year's performance, and instead of being the fifth quickest car on average, as they are now, they would be eighth fastest, ahead of only Haas and Sauber.

Gasly's seventh secured the first points for Alpine this season, while Esteban Ocon drove an outstanding race in the Haas to take eighth after a heavy crash in qualifying left him 15th on the grid.

The second Haas of Oliver Bearman took 10th for the second race running, the two cars sandwiching the Red Bull of Yuki Tsunoda.
