As the morning fog lifted, the jagged peaks of the Hohe Tauern mountain range — including the mighty Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain at 12,460 feet — slowly emerged.

To the north of the valley of the Drave the duchy is occupied by the Hohe Tauern and the primitive Alps of Carinthia and Styria, which belong to the central zone of the Eastern Alps.

For they were "stepping westward;" but in order to get to the Gross-Venediger I must make a detour to the east, through the Pusterthal, and come up through the valley of the Isel to the great chain of mountains called the Hohe Tauern.
