Orkney Islands Council has accepted it must remain part of the UK - after spending two years exploring opportunities for greater autonomy.

Emma MacDonald, the leader of Shetland Islands Council, described the community as "shocked and saddened".

Among them was Orkney Islands Council which agreed a 15% increase to council tax - the largest in the country.

The tank was built with the help of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, which awarded £80,000 to Orkney Islands Council to help preserve the wreck.

Moraig Lyall, chair of the environment and transport committee of Shetland Islands Council, said annual household bills in the islands were often more than double the UK average of £1,700 and showed no sign of falling as a result of hosting Viking.
