Prosecutors in Mexico have arrested the mayor of Teuchitlán in western Jalisco state as part of their investigation into a nearby cartel training site.

He confirmed that the site had been used as a training centre for recruits of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the most feared and powerful transnational drug trafficking gangs, which has its power base in Jalisco.

Mexico’s attorney general said a forensic investigation found ‘not a shred of proof’ that corpses were burned at a ranch that was used as a training camp by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

The scale of the crisis was brought to the nation’s attention in March when a group of activist searchers came upon an abandoned ranch in the western state of Jalisco.

Gertz confirmed that the ranch — situated in an agricultural zone about 37 miles outside Guadalajara, Mexico’s second largest city — had operated as a training and operations hub for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, among Mexico’s most powerful criminal syndicates.
