By July 1946, Belafonte was playing a leading role in the American Negro Theatre’s production of “Juno and the Paycock.”

Well, I love this one but outside of Succession, I adored Juno and the Paycock in the off-Broadway production.

The casting director was taken aback, but mentioned him to Olivier, who gave him a part as an IRA man in Juno And The Paycock.

While working on a book about the actor, the biographer Alexander Larman had a glimpse of screen versions of the Seán O’Casey play Juno and the Paycock, and Chekhov’s work Uncle Vanya.

Further insights will emerge from the screenplays, he believes, noting that Juno and the Paycock, about the dysfunctional Boyle family living in Dublin tenements, has a character “who’s very similar to O’Toole’s father, who was quite a nasty man”.
