As the B-29 bomber Bockscar headed to its initial target of Kokura on the morning of Aug. 9, 1945, thick haze and smoke forced it to switch at the last minute to Nagasaki, a second target.

Nagasaki was actually not the initial target of the attack, but was only chosen after bad weather obscured the main target city of Kokura.

Bullet trains connecting Osaka and Kokura were suspended Thursday, and hundreds of domestic flights were grounded, holding up holidaymakers.

The Pentagon later released a video that it said showed a crew from an Iranian patrol boat removing an unexploded mine from the hull of the Kokura Courageous.
