The novel, published by L’Iconoclaste, is a sprawling fresco that follows Michelangelo “Mimo” Vitaliani, a dwarf and skilled sculptor who at the end of his life is said to be “watching over” his masterpiece, a mysteriously powerful sculpture.

Andrea, a former screenwriter, sets the nearly 600-page “Watching Over Her,” or “Veiller Sur Elle” in French, across several tumultuous decades in 20th-century Italy, including the years of fascism’s rise, when a younger Mimo forges an intense bond with the adventurous daughter of an aristocratic family.

Built in 1957, the Deauville was a recognizable attraction on Miami Beach, with the clean lines and lavish interiors typical of the architectural style known as Miami Modern, or MiMo.

Before its closure, the Deauville — built in 1957 and included later in a historic district that seeks to preserve an architectural style known as Miami Modern, or MiMo — was considered an economic engine for North Beach, which even now could use the foot traffic.

A second location is scheduled to open in the city’s MiMo district in March.
