Mr Osman, who held a masters degree in mining geology, had boarded the plane on the evening of 18 May 2016 for a business trip.

Her career, which she calls “higgledy-piggledy,” stretches from mining geology to venture capital to banking to becoming the first female chief executive of CSIRO, an Australian scientific research agency.

"I wanted to see whether I would miss the job and discovered I didn't miss it much at all," says Birch, who has a doctorate in mining geology from Imperial College London.
