The Moho lies some 35 kilometers below thick continental crust.

The Moho braccatus was declared endangered in 1973, and by the early 1980s its population had dwindled to two, one male and one female.

He had discovered the boundary between the crust and the layer immediately below, the mantle; this zone has been known ever since as the Mohorovičić discontinuity, or Moho for short.

And after that, he and his colleagues hope to use the Japanese drill ship Chikyu in the project’s third phase to drill all the way to the Moho.

In particular, Prof MacLeod is keen to probe the so-called Moho boundary.
