Police said five assailants wearing masks and dark clothing beat the 22-year-old with a blunt weapon after entering his flat in Morar Drive.

The event was felt just before 15:30 on Saturday in Mallaig and Morar and by islanders on Lismore in the Inner Hebrides.

Villagers in Mallaig and Morar said they also "felt a weak trembling", as well as experiencing the same noise.

It acts as lifeline service, connecting the communities of Fort William, Ardgour, Sunart, Ardnamurchan, Moidart, Morar, Morvern and the Isle of Mull.

People living in Sunart, Ardnamurchan, Moidart, Morar, Morvern and the Isle of Mull also use the ferry to reach Fort William and beyond.
