The National Weather Service office in Oxnard warned of elevated fire weather conditions across swaths of Southern California this week — conditions that could turn critical during brief periods.

“That was the hottest temperature of the year by a good margin” for Palm Springs, said Sebastian Westerink, a National Weather Service meteorologist in San Diego.

Wind speeds were at 22 mph around 2 p.m. and strengthened to 31 mph around 4 p.m., according to the Oxnard office of the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service has a beach hazard advisory in place through Tuesday afternoon at Ventura County beaches, along the Malibu coast and at Los Angeles beaches.

And a series of scares in U.S. aviation, coupled with cuts to the National Park Service and the National Weather Service, have made planning trips to some of the country’s top destinations less reliable.
