At one point, the blaze encroached upon the homes of Close and assistant Tony Newnan, who live near the edge of the fire zone.

Fortunately, none of the athletes or coaches — except Close and Newnan — had their homes in immediate danger or were forced to evacuate.

Assistant coach Tony Newnan, sitting several rows behind home plate, took his phone out to record Jaquez’s debut as she trotted from the dugout in the bottom of the fifth on May 23 to pinch run for catcher Sharlize Palacios.

Like a proud father, Newnan kept recording as Jaquez advanced to second on a ground out from Megan Grant.
