Piastri got the cut-back on Norris out of the corner and they drove down the back straight towards the final chicane side by side, Piastri on the inside.

To be entitled to be given space - ie, to have been judged to have won the corner - the driver overtaking on the inside has to have his front axle "at least alongside the mirror of the other car prior to and at the apex".

According to the guidelines, Russell was entitled to the corner, because he was more or less completely alongside Verstappen - the rules say that a driver overtaking on the inside has to have his car's front axle at least level with the wing mirror of the one on the outside to be given space.

But as Russell went around him, Verstappen suddenly appeared back on the inside and speared into his car.

Verstappen complained that Russell had pushed him off, but his engineer Giampiero Lambiase ordered him to give the position back, citing the rules on racing which say that a driver on the inside trying an overtaking move has the right to the corner if he is far enough alongside going in.
