Joan Jara, a British-born dancer and instructor who dedicated herself to finding justice for her husband, Victor Jara, a popular Chilean folk singer and songwriter who was killed during the military coup d’état that brought Gen. Augusto Pinochet Ugarte to dictatorial power in 1973, died on Nov. 12 in Santiago, Chile.

Army General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, Chile’s stern-visaged chief of state, told a crowded assembly of coup supporters that political prisoners—”with the exception of a few particularly serious cases”—would be allowed “to leave forever the national territory.”

Another Cannes highlight is Pablo Larraín’s “No,” an often perversely comic drama, with Gael García Bernal as an advertising man helping the left win the 1988 Chilean referendum that forced out Gen. Augusto Pinochet Ugarte.

Weirdly funny and rousing, both intellectually and emotionally, “No” revisits the remarkable moment when Gen. Augusto Pinochet Ugarte was forced out by the No campaign, a center-left coalition that packaged resistance into commercials featuring jingles, a rainbow graphic and wide smiles, the nightmare legacy of the coup d’état vanquished by a brilliant coup de théâtre.
