I was thinking about Powell and Pressburger.

Gerwig selected five films to be shown during the festival and will be appearing in person to introduce a screening of Tim Burton’s “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” at the Chinese Theatre, where the film first premiered in 1985, as well as Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1946 romantic fantasy “A Matter of Life and Death.”

Before a Cannes screening in 2009 of Film Foundation’s screening of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1948 masterpiece “The Red Shoes,” Scorsese said restoration only matters if people see the work.

I think about magical moments I spent there: being dazzled by Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” for the first time, back in the ’90s before Allen’s purchase and renovation of the theater; sitting with my nephew and enjoying all the kids in costume for a “Harry Potter” screening; giggling in the balcony with my friend Bethany Jean Clement on a Dinner at a Movie outing; disappearing into the gorgeous Powell/Pressburger film “The Tales of Hoffmann,” like getting lost in a field of Technicolor poppies.
