For Matt Wolf, the man behind “Pee-wee as Himself,” about Paul Reubens and his alter ego Pee-wee Herman, it was important to craft a nuanced portrait.

In the candid, absorbing documentary, “Pee-wee as Himself,” the late Paul Reubens wants to set the record straight.

Unknown to Wolf, Reubens, who sat for 40 hours of interviews before withdrawing from the project for unstated reasons in the film, had been sick with a blood cancer for six years.

“You don’t have perspective, really, on yourself,” Reubens says to Wolf.
