Andrei Rublyov's 15th-century work, perhaps the most famous and artistically significant Russian icon, has been displayed in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour since Sunday, and was due to stay for a year before moving to a monastery.

Andrei Rublyov's Trinity, one of the holiest and most artistically important Russian icons, is thought to have been painted to honour Saint Sergius of Radonezh in Sergiyev Posad, near Moscow.

“It was as if an icon painted by Andrei Rublyov from time to time threw up on worshipers,” Pavel V. Pepperstein, an artist, told the magazine Afisha.

The controversial film Andrei Rublyov, based on the life of the 15th century monk who founded a new school of icon painting, was recently released after a six-year ban.
