He was appointed to first sea lord in November 2021 and is succeeded by Gen Sir Gwyn Jenkins of the Royal Marines.

The Royal Navy's Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral, Sir Martin Connell, said the ship was "a pure-bred Anti-Submarine Warfare platform, setting the standard for naval warfare".

Gen Sir Gwyn Jenkins has taken over the role after Adm Sir Ben Key was removed as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff while under investigation over allegations of misconduct.

He is now the chief strategic adviser to the Defence Secretary John Healey and is tipped to take over as First Sea Lord - the head of the Royal Navy.

Earlier this week, the MoD issued a statement to say that the First Sea Lord had "stepped back due to private reasons".
