The Kern, fed by snowmelt in the southern Sierra Nevada, is a boating and trout-fishing mecca that attracts visitors from nearby Southern California cities as well as tourists from around the world.

The latest outlook from the National Interagency Fire Center warns of “significant fire potential” in Northern California, the Sierra Nevada and several of the state’s coastal areas through September.

“We’re stuck in the middle of Sierra Nevada so the weather is very unpredictable,” he said.

The area is known for its sunshine - an alpine lake surrounded by mountains in the Sierra Nevada.
